BROOMSTRAW

“And didn’t she take a straw and check to see if the cake was done. Didn’t I see her do that? It’s witchcraft is what it is. How in all of nature can a broom straw predict if a cake is done.”

“There’s dough on the straw if the cake is not done. It’s a testing is all.”

“Science then and what’s worse… But I still think it witchcraft. The cake tasted of strawberries and honeycomb and it the middle of winter. And she divined it with a broom straw.”

Rune Meditation

RUNE READING

For this king of reading, it’s best to set aside a period of time when you won’t be disturbed. This is not a quick read. You need a drink and a bit of food, like bread, a candle, two index cards, a pen and a red marker, and of course, your runes. Cast a folk circle or open your rune ring.
Get comfortable and light the candle. Center. Begin a breath pattern for focus. Word your question in mind, then write it very simply onto one of the index cards. If possible, speak your question aloud.
Draw one rune from your rune set. After you’ve looked at the rune for awhile, close your eyes and see it in your mind. Hold the image as long as you can. Open your eyes and see the rune shape, then again close your eyes and see it.
When you are ready, lie down or simply remain relaxed, as you have been. See the rune; visualize it as vividly as possible. You might do this better with your eyes closed. Let it grow to the size of a doorway. That’s what it becomes in this meditation, a doorway.
Go through the rune into the world which that rune represents. See what’s there. Pay attention. If you meet someone, ask your question and listen for the answer. If not, then listen for other sounds and watch for sights that may give a clue.
Pay attention to how you feel in this place. This can tell you a lot about the situation you’re concerned with in the reading. I’ve often gotten a feeling when reading that had nothing to do with the actual meanings of the runes, or at least none I had learned prior to that time. In retrospect, on consideration of the new learning, I could easily see how the feeling fit with the rune’s energy. Things will check out in a reasonable way. In other words, the rune won’t tell you something that is out of its character.
DON’T USE REVERSED RUNES. If you draw the rune reversed, turn it upright to do the meditation. Afterward, adjust what you’ve learned in light of the fact the rune was reversed when drawn.
THIS WORKS GREAT! You’ll get answers a lot more precise than with the usual association method. With Tarot, this method is even easier. You simply ask your question, relax and step into the card. The pictures help create what you find. Try a three-card reading in this way. Step into them one at a time for three aspects of your answer.
Write everything you can remember of the journey and the answers you receive. Remember that what you were told this time with that particular rune or card may not be true for every time you draw that same rune or card. This answer has an added dimension. However, it will usually be something that you can add to your general fund of information because what you hear will be true to the nature of the rune or card.
With all of these journeys, it is important to completely return to Midgard, ( your regular waking world) afterward. This is why you brought the drink and the food. Eating will ground you after the meditation.

RUNE WORK:

Morning is a great time to use your method of Knowing. In the way of the Handmaidens, runes are the divination to use. Draw a rune and write it into your journal. During the day, see how it shows itself.  If you draw a murk stave or rune with a less than desirable meaning, ask for help in handling the situation that may be foreshadowed by that rune. Pull another rune, either without looking or by actively choosing a particular rune which will offset the effects of the murk rune. Place the bright rune on your altar. Light a candle and draw a line from the candle light to the rune. Extinguish the candle before you leave for the day.
